Ralph Lauren Bedding – The Upper Echelon

When you talk about designers, Ralph Lauren is pretty much the top of the food chain. One of the 200 richest men of the world, Ralph Lauren built his name from scratch as he opened a tie store in 1967. He pushed the envelope, creating fashion trends across the spectrum of interests, and built a company that currently employs over 19,000 people and has 5 billion dollars a year in revenue. With all of this success, you have to imagine that his bedding sets are probably pretty nice too.

When it comes to recognizing the Ralph Lauren Home brand, you can find it listed under a variety of different names. Chaps, American Living, Lauren Ralph Lauren, and Ralph Lauren Home are all used for different product lines in their home division. While we’ll be looking at a variety of Ralph Lauren bedding sets here, we cover Chaps bedding elsewhere on the site, so we won’t go into much detail on that line here.

Ralph Lauren's down comforters are pricey, but they are top quality.

The home products made by Ralph Lauren are done in a licensing deal with other companies. This can often sound confusing and at first, tricked me into thinking that Ralph Lauren didn’t actually have anything to do with his various bedding products. However, the way these deals work is that Ralph Lauren does the design work, as well as the marketing, advertising and sometimes even the sales, while the partner handles the manufacturing and shipping of the bedding sets.

Shopping for Ralph Lauren bedding, you’ll find it in most department stores, but knowing the name you’ll find it under can be fairly tricky. At Kohls, you’ll see it as Chaps bedding. At JC Penney, it’s listed as American Living bedding. And at Macy’s and Amazon, you’ll see it promoted as Ralph Lauren bedding. These different names can be frustrating, but each line tends to run in different price points with the Ralph Lauren name itself demanding prices in the three to five hundred dollar range for comforters.

The Ralph Lauren Port Palace set is beautiful if you can spend $400 on bedding.

Dealing with the various sets of Ralph Lauren bedding, there’s a ton of great options available. One of the most popular ones I see is his wide variety of down comforters. It’s interesting that the line comes from a world renowned designer and in the end, it’s a fairly standard looking bedding set. However, what separates this set from a lot of the others on the market is its high quality. Made with hypoallergenic white duck down and a high thread count, Ralph Lauren’s down comforters are a higher end option in the market.

If you’re more interested in getting a bedroom set for yourself, one of my favorite adult sets is the Port Palace Collection. A great black white bedding set, it features nice black floral prints on a white background. The floral design itself is very simplistic and it really stands out nicely against the white background. Of course, like all Ralph Lauren sets, it can be expensive with the duvet coming in at 430 dollars.

The Caitlin collection is one of Ralph Lauren's designs for kids.

For children, Ralph Lauren bedding fortunately tones the price down some with options that are a bit more affordable. A great option in this line is the University Caitlin collection which features a nice plaid pattern of green, white and pink. The design is definitely feminine, but it’s done in a professional enough way that I think the set does a nice job of looking good and not seeming too girly. The coloring also seems rich enough to stand out, and at only 100 dollars for the comforter, you could certainly do a lot worse.

Overall, Ralph Lauren is a designer that commands a lot of respect in the fashion world. His forays into the bedding industry have been successful, albeit being rather expensive for the average consumer. Still, if you’re put off by his standard lines, there’s always his Chaps bedding and American Living bedding sets for more budget-minded consumers. If you have any of his sets, let us know how you’ve felt about it, and of course, even if you don’t, feel free to share your thoughts!
